Color of the Moment: Plum

The September issues of all our favorite fashion magazines have hit the shelves, boutiques have switched out bikinis for boots in their window displays, and wardrobe color palettes are making a refreshing transition. One of the coolest colors for this fall is plum; everything from leather flats to tinted lips. Although some autumn hues can be drab and dreary, plum has a warmth to it that will make you feel toasty even on the chilliest fall days.

Whether you want to test it out on your nails first or upgrade your everyday satchel to this sultry shade, plum comes in endless pieces, materials, and accessories to satisfy anyone’s fashion fetish. For example, I absolutely love how plum looks on leather and lace; something about it just looks so regal to me. I also gravitate towards this shade of lipstick and eyeshadow for special occasions as a fun twist on my regular smokey eye. It usually tends to look best on medium to dark skin tones and also makes hazel/brown eyes pop. Bonus!

If you’re wondering what other colors you should wear with this luxe pigment, I’ve got you covered. Some people might think that plum is enough color for one outfit, but they are sadly mistaken. Seen all over the runway as well as in real life, one of the top color combinations for fall 2013 is plum and mustard. These shades can be color-blocked or accessorized as finishing touches — but I’m about to take it even further. Topping off this ingenious color combo with a bit of navy can instantly make a good outfit great. To enhance the ensemble of mustard trousers and a plum cardigan, throw on some navy flats and gold jewelry and you’ll be turning heads left and right.

If you need a little inspiration, try mimicking the looks created above. My girl Olivia Palermo (top left) opted for a mustard cable-knit sweater and plum skinnies, while the fashionista on the top right reversed the color-blocking for a more work-appropriate look. As for the adorable outfit in the middle, this babe gets brownie points for cleverly incorporating navy into the mix with a gingham blouse.

How will you wear plum this fall?
